Is it allowed to run a bathroom exaust vent duct up to a passive roof vent or a ridge vent? I expect this is close to the requirement to exhaust directly to the outside, but not quite right. It seems to depend on the interpretation of "directly to the outside". At least it doesn't exhaust to the floor of the attic like most.
I always get a bit confused by fireplace chimney height/clearance levels and I'm not sure if this one is wrong. I saw this at a house yesterday. The chimney is for a fireplace that has a gas log set installed and could be converted back to a wood burning unit easily. The top of the chimney flue is below the adjacent sidewall of the 2nd floor level of the house and less than 10 feet from the sidewall (somewhere around 9.5 feet).
Is this a defect?
Hello.
I have a 9 step stairway going into my basement. The left side, going down, is along a wall. The bottom tread nose is almost flush with a lolly column on the right side (where a newell post would be). The lolly column extends 1" past the tread nose. The stairs "dead end" into a wall, 40" away from the bottom tread. The treads are 48" wide, 40" usable, 11" deep.
I want to change the orientation of the last tread. Instead of stepping down onto the basement floor facing a wall, I want to make a landing which would turn you to the right, 90 degrees, around the lolly column, so you're facing the room when you step off the last tread.
Essentially, I want to turn the last tread into a landing, to make an "L".
The dimensions I gave, above, would mean that the landing would be 51" in the direction of travel down the stairs (11" bottom tread extended 40" into the wall). Turning right 90 degrees, the landing would be 39" wide (the distance from the lolly column to the wall.
This size landing seems to be more than adequate based on the building code. Am I wrong?
Here's the "issue": Stepping down from that new landing, which would be 39" wide, the wall is on the left, open space elsewhere. There is a cabinet built into the wall on the left. It is 26" away from the hypothetical tread nose. The cabinet comes out of the wall 18".
So, stepping off the 39" landing onto the floor, the left 18" of the landing has a cabinet 26" away. The right 21" of the landing are clear. Is this allowed?
Thanks,
Ken
Hi guys,
I was inspecting 58 years old house last week and the electrical panel didn't have "main disconnect switch".
I'm looking for a good article about old panels and what we should exactly inspect when we face them?
Thanks,

I have a drain problem with two possible solutions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
1. Replace leaking under-slab sink drain by tearing up floor/cabinets/walls through entire length of kitchen, cut trench in concrete slab, replace broken pipe (and water supply lines in same original trench on top of leaking waste line). Patch concrete, install 300 sq. ft. new flooring, reinstall cabinets and (probably new) counters.
2. Abandon old drain in place and install new drain outside along exterior wall, properly sloped, concealed below wood deck conveniently located on other side of exterior wall directly behind the sink and at the perfect height to conceal the drain. This would run about 15' outside before turning back into the house (where there is a lower level) and connecting into the waste stack at the original location. Basically, just offsetting the pipe around the slab instead of under it.
Can anyone weigh in on code issues, freezing issues? Would I need heat trace or just insulation? It can get below zero a few times a year here in the Midwest.
I have never seen type type of inducer unit before. It's difficult to depict from the photo but the hood is not centered over the flue. This is a rheem water heater, gas, 75 gallons manufactured in 1997. Is this correct. JDLR;)
The wall on and in which we have our TV and the cabinet holding various A/V components is the other side of our attached garage wall. Currently, when we use the components, we just leave the cabinet doors open (since it gets too hot in there if you try to use them with it closed). Doesn't really bother me, but my wife talked to some guy recently who said that we could operate them with the door closed by cutting out a spot in the back side of the cabinet and putting a venting fan there. I haven't had a chance to talk to the guy myself yet but this seems wrong to me. As I said, on the other side of the cabinet is our attached garage. So cutting a hole in the back of the cabinets would mean venting to the garage. Isn't that dangerous with regard to garage fumes and stuff. Is something like that even allowed under building codes? Is a particular section of the building code (California) to which someone code refer me to read up on the issue myself?
My wife said she mentioned to the guy that the vent would lead to the garage and the guy said that was fine. So she's pretty gung ho about this because she loves the idea of not having to keep those cabinet doors open. Like I said, I haven't caught up with him yet to get clarification, but in the meantime, I thought I'd ask here to see if maybe I'm just totally off-base in questioning this.
